Summer schools for year 12's to be aware of

A handful of medical schools across the UK offer applicants with the opportunity to embark on free residential summer schools to learn more about university life and medicine, mostly as a part of widening participation or outreach initiatives. Many school students aren't aware of these opportunities or find out about them too late to benefit, and most of these students are the ones who would benefit most.

Below you will find a list of summer schools aimed at medicine applicants in the UK as well as when applications are expected to open/close.

The University of Bristol

he week long Sutton Trust summer school at Bristol gives students academic and social taste to university life. They typically have around 20 places and students who successfully complete the programme get a guaranteed contextual offer

The University of Cardiff

Typically taking place towards the end of July, Cardiff's week long summer school provides year 12 students with a flavour for the student life at Cardiff, covering social and academic activities while accompanied by current medical students.

The University of Cambridge

The 3 day long Cambridge Sutton Trust summer school provides students with the opportunity to be taught in a university-style, embark on their own research projects and participate in academic activities such as seminars and Cambridge's supervisions, while giving students a taste of the social scene in Cambridge.

Hull York Medical School

The university of York offer a 2-year programme targeted at students living in the North of England, encouraging them to explore their university options and provide support and preparation called Next Step York.

The university of York offer a summer school called the 'University of York Experience Summer School'

The University of Hull offer a year 12 summer school

Hull York Medical School offer a residential summer school (which was continued online during COVID)

Y12 LondonMed Summer school

The week-long Y12 LondonMed summer school is a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London, King’s College London and St George’s University of London (so this summer school gets you experience of 4 universities in one go!) Year 12 students learn about topics such as medical ethics and law.

The University of Nottingham

This university offers students a 5 day residential involving a variety of activities. Students who successfully complete the summer school are eligible for a contextual offer and may possibly receive the Nottingham Potential Bursary (£1000 for each year of study).

In 2021, Nottingham catered for the following medicine subject areas as part of their summer school

• Medicine and Medical Sciences

• Veterinary Medicine and the Science of Animals

The University of St Andrews

This university offers 'Summer Academic Experience Courses' to offer students to experience courses of interest and develop their academic research and writing skills (which costs 4.5k)..- but that's not the summer school I'm here to talk about.

St Andrews offer a week-long Sutton Trust summer school open to all year 12 UK students attending state schools. As part of the summer school students embark on a burst of learning that mimics the university student style.
